The Andover Wetlands was establishd in 1851 when the railroad came through the valley. It consists of 4 man-made ponds and is an historical site as the ponds were used to cut ice which was carried to surrounding communities by rail. it also powered a grain mill, saw mill and served then as it does today as a back-up source of water for the Fire Department. The wetlands attracts bald eagles, osprey, ducks and geese. falcons. and numerous song birds. It also is home to several species of fish and also a variety of endangered lilies.
The annual kids fishing contest is a great way to enjoy a family day of fun. There is no entry fee for kids to fish and the age groups are: 5 and under, 6-8, 9-11, and 12-15. The trophies are provided by the Town of Andover and awarded at 2:45 PM. The refreshments are donated by Pepsi, Frito-Lay and local businesses and are provided free of charge to all in attendance. There are raffles and door prizes and no child goes home empty handed even if they do not win a trophy. Goody bags are also given to all participants filled with fishing tackle, gift certificates, and sweet treats.
Each year we depend on our local businesses to help with donations of merchandise and contributions which help with the purchase of items for the door prizes, adult and kids raffles that are held during the day. We have several national fishing tackle companies who donate merchandise that is also used for the prizes and goody bags. The cooperation of these entities has made this annual event a big success for the last 28 years.
We have had wonderful support from the local community, Village of Andover, Town of Andover and community service organizations across the Southern Tier of New York State and Northern Pennsylvania in donation of services and participation in the event.
This event provides several benefits such as a day of fun with friends and family, lessons in environmental conservation and allows the participants to learn the techniques of fishing while sharing the companionship of kids from other communities.
We are a non-profit organization with a group of volunteers who help promote the sport of fishing to the youth of the area and try to show them the joys of the outdoors and the wonders that nature provides.
